Nautical inspired design for a stunning Solent view
This is a new home in Cowes that I designed to replace a 1940s bungalow. It provides splendid views of the Solent from the first-floor living room and the master suite on the second floor. The house faces the sea, we designed the front as a huge glass gable to truly take in the view. It is supported with a structural mast reminiscent of the old square riggers, carrying glass balconies and a projecting ridge beam to carry an overhanging roof.

A fort penthouse gets a timely update
Wight Architecture was appointed to design and manage the modernisation and refurbishment of this penthouse on the roof of Fort Albert. The property suffered from severe damp penetration and basic services. The tower was only accessible via a ladder passing through rough holes cut in the intermediate concrete floors.
We designed and constructed a new master bedroom suite on the roof of the living room, curved to blend in with the existing structure, which was originally designed to accommodate a rotating gun. The existing building was stripped back to the bare bones, tanked to prevent damp and insulated to current standards. Underfloor heating was fitted throughout, along with new power and lighting. The heavily articulated radial structure of the living room ceiling has been revealed and left exposed as it tells the story of the building and adds dynamic visual interest to the space.
A modern glasshouse with a Victorian footprint
My clients purchased the site in 2004 with a planning consent to re-erect a (totally impractical) single glazed Victorian pastiche glass house for residential use. My brief was simple in theory: negotiate with the local authority and obtain statutory consents for a modern glasshouse to be erected on the original footprint of the extant Victorian brick and stone basement which would be converted to studio and workshop space for the artist client.
Alteration: The Garden Room
Edwardian house meets open-plan living
This project in Cambridge replaces a leaky conservatory with additional living space that can be used year-round. Folding-sliding doors help to bring the outside in so that the living area flows out into the garden.
Conversion and renovation of a former care home to a private residence
This exciting project is a self-build on an epic scale involving the reconstruction of the roof to incorporate a lift turret and the removal of previous alterations to recreate a splendid Edwardian Home. Sea views to the front and down land views to the rear. The project is currently under construction and we are maintaining a watching brief, advising the owner as and when required.
